Description

White willow bark (Salix alba) is the original source of salicin, the natural compound that inspired the development of aspirin. This dried willow bark has been used for thousands of years to support joint comfort, ease mild headaches, and relieve occasional aches. As a bark, white willow needs simmering (decoction) to release its active compounds. The natural salicin in willow bark is converted to salicylic acid in the body, providing a gentler, slower-acting effect compared to synthetic aspirin.

Key Benefits

  • Joint comfort: Traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support joint comfort and ease occasional stiffness. One of the most well-established herbs for this purpose, with clinical research supporting its traditional use.
  • Headache relief: Traditionally used to help relieve mild headaches and head tension. The original “aspirin” remedy used for over 2,000 years.
  • Gentle and sustained: Unlike synthetic aspirin, white willow bark provides a slower, more sustained effect as the body gradually converts salicin to its active form. This gentler action is traditionally considered easier on the stomach.
  • The aspirin story: In 1899, Bayer synthesised acetylsalicylic acid based on the salicin found in willow bark and meadowsweet. White willow bark remains one of the most historically significant herbs in Western medicine.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried white willow bark to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups daily. The flavour is quite bitter and astringent.

Joint blend: Simmer white willow bark with Ginger Root for warmth, then add Meadowsweet after removing from heat for a dual-salicylate joint support tea. Add Nettle Leaf for mineral support.

Headache blend: Combine with Feverfew and Peppermint for a traditional headache relief tea.

Hippocrates wrote about the pain-relieving properties of willow bark around 400 BCE, but archaeological evidence shows willow bark was used medicinally as far back as ancient Sumer (4,000 years ago). It remains one of the longest-continuously-used plant medicines in human history.

Willow bark contains salicin, not salicylic acid. The conversion happens in the gut and liver, which is why the effect is slower and more sustained than aspirin. This also means willow bark does not directly irritate the stomach lining the way aspirin can.

Not suitable for people with aspirin sensitivity or salicylate allergy. Not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or for children under 16 (Reye’s syndrome risk). May interact with blood-thinning medications, NSAIDs, and methotrexate. Toxic to cats (salicylate sensitivity). This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
