Description

Hydrangea root (Hydrangea arborescens), also known as Seven Barks, is a traditional Native American herb with a long history of use by the Cherokee people. This dried root produces a mildly sweet, slightly pungent decoction that has been valued in Western herbalism for supporting urinary tract comfort. Not to be confused with common garden hydrangeas, wild hydrangea is a specialty medicinal herb that requires simmering to draw out its beneficial compounds.

Key Benefits

  • Urinary comfort: Traditionally used in Native American and Western herbal medicine to support healthy urinary tract function and comfort.
  • Traditional heritage: Used by the Cherokee and other Indigenous peoples of eastern North America for centuries. Adopted into Western herbalism in the 19th century by the Eclectic physicians.
  • Decoction herb: The hard, dried root requires simmering rather than simple steeping, which slowly extracts the full range of compounds including coumarins, flavonoids, and saponins.
  • Synergistic blending: Traditionally combined with other urinary support herbs such as gravel root, marshmallow root, and corn silk in Western herbal formulas.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried hydrangea root to 2 cups of water. Bring to a gentle boil, then simmer on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is mildly sweet with a slightly pungent finish. Can be sweetened with honey if desired.

Herbal blending: Traditionally combined with Gravel Root and Marshmallow Root for a classic urinary support formula. Juniper Berries also complement this herb well in traditional formulas.

Note: The root is very hard when dried. Simmering (decoction) is essential to extract the active compounds. A simple hot water steep will not be effective with this herb.

The common name “Seven Barks” comes from the distinctive bark of the wild hydrangea shrub, which peels away in multiple thin layers of different colours. Cherokee people traditionally used various parts of the plant, and their knowledge was eventually adopted by 19th-century Eclectic physicians who popularised it in Western herbal practice.

This is not the same species as common garden hydrangeas (which are typically Hydrangea macrophylla). Do not substitute ornamental garden hydrangeas for this product.
