Description

Baikal skullcap root (Scutellaria baicalensis), known as Huang Qin in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the most important herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia. This dried root contains exceptionally high levels of baicalin and baicalein, flavone compounds that have been the subject of extensive modern research. Baikal skullcap root is a decoction herb that needs simmering to release its active compounds.

Key Benefits

  • TCM heritage: One of the 50 fundamental herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, used continuously for over 2,000 years. Listed in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing, China’s oldest herbal text.
  • Rich in baicalin: Contains baicalin and baicalein, flavone compounds that are among the most researched natural antioxidants. These compounds are largely unique to this species.
  • Antioxidant support: Traditionally used to support the body’s natural antioxidant defences and promote general wellbeing.
  • Not American skullcap: Baikal skullcap is a completely different herb from American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), which Herb Cottage also sells as Skullcap. The two have different traditional uses and active compounds.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried baikal skullcap root to a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is distinctly bitter. Add Licorice Root for natural sweetness.

TCM-style blend: In Chinese herbal tradition, Huang Qin is rarely used alone. Combine with Astragalus Root for a classic pairing, or with Ginger Root to balance the root’s cold nature.

The roots of baikal skullcap are bright yellow when freshly cut, which is reflected in the Chinese name Huang Qin (yellow). Good quality dried root should still show hints of this golden colour. The deeper the yellow, the richer the baicalin content.

Over 3,000 scientific papers have been published on baicalin and related compounds from this plant, making it one of the most intensively studied herbs in modern phytochemistry.
